MSMA and 2,4-D are two of the most common herbicides used on Southern lawns. Mixing them can be effective for broad-spectrum weed control, but it needs to be done carefully and correctly. Here's what you need to know.

Can You Mix MSMA and 2,4-D?

Yes, MSMA and 2,4-D can be tank-mixed, and this combination is commonly used by lawn care professionals in the Southeast. MSMA targets grassy weeds (crabgrass, dallisgrass, nutsedge), while 2,4-D targets broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, chickweed). Together, they provide broad-spectrum weed control.

However, there are important caveats about timing, rates, and safety.

Important: MSMA Availability

The EPA has restricted MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate) use. As of recent regulations, MSMA is only approved for use on cotton, sod farms, golf courses, and highway rights-of-way. It is no longer available for residential lawn use in most states. If you're a homeowner, you'll need to use alternative products (see below). If you're a sod farm or golf course operator, MSMA is still available through professional suppliers.

Mixing Ratios

When mixing is permitted, typical professional application rates are:

  • MSMA: 2–3 oz per gallon of water (for spot treatment) or 2–3 pints per acre (broadcast)
  • 2,4-D: 1–1.5 oz per gallon of water (spot treatment) or 1–1.5 pints per acre (broadcast)

Always follow the label rates for your specific products. The label is the law.

Application Guidelines

  1. Temperature: Apply when temps are between 60°F and 85°F. MSMA becomes more phytotoxic (damaging to your grass) above 85°F. Do NOT apply in extreme heat.
  2. Timing: Apply to actively growing weeds in spring or early summer. Weeds should be young and actively growing for best results.
  3. Grass type: This mix is generally safe on Bermuda grass. Use caution on Zoysia (reduced rates). Do NOT use on Fescue, Bluegrass, or St. Augustine — it will damage or kill these grasses.
  4. Watering: Do not irrigate for 24 hours after application. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours.
  5. Repeat applications: If needed, wait at least 7–10 days between applications. Do not exceed 2 applications per season.

Safety Precautions

  • Wear chemical-resistant gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection
  • MSMA contains arsenic — avoid skin contact and do not inhale spray
  • Keep children and pets off treated areas for at least 24 hours (until the lawn is dry)
  • Do not apply near water sources, wells, or drainage areas
  • Store both products in original containers, away from children and food
  • Triple-rinse spray equipment after use

Alternatives to MSMA for Homeowners

Since MSMA is restricted for residential use, here are effective alternatives:

  • For crabgrass: Quinclorac (Drive XLR8) — safe on Bermuda and Zoysia
  • For nutsedge: Sulfentrazone (Dismiss) or Halosulfuron (SedgeHammer)
  • For broadleaf weeds: 2,4-D alone, or combination products like Trimec
  • Pre-emergent: Prodiamine (Barricade) in early spring prevents crabgrass before it starts

When to Call a Professional

If you're not comfortable handling herbicides or your weed problem is extensive, a professional applicator can handle the treatment safely and effectively. For sod farms and golf courses where MSMA is still permitted, proper equipment and calibration are essential for uniform application.

Starting with healthy, thick sod is the best defense against weeds. A dense stand of Tifway 419 or NorthBridge Bermuda will crowd out most weeds before they can establish.
