Tifway 419 Bermudagrass
The gold standard for six decades. Proven on thousands of sports fields, golf courses, and lawns — and still one of the most affordable, available bermudas you can buy.
Why Tifway 419?
Tifway 419 is the most widely used hybrid bermudagrass in the world — and has been for over sixty years. Developed by Dr. Glenn Burton at the USDA research station in Tifton, Georgia, it set the standard that every bermuda since has been measured against. Its deep green color, fine texture, dense growth, and rapid recovery from wear made it the obvious choice for golf courses, NFL fields, and residential lawns across the southern United States. While newer varieties like Latitude 36 and NorthBridge have surpassed it in cold tolerance, disease resistance, and spring green-up, Tifway 419 still wins where it matters most for many buyers: it's proven, widely available, and affordable. In warm southern climates where cold hardiness is less of a concern, it remains an excellent performer. For Tennessee properties, it's a solid budget option — but buyers should be aware of its limitations in the transition zone, particularly its susceptibility to spring dead spot and later spring green-up compared to newer alternatives.
60+ Years of Proven Performance
No bermuda has a longer, more documented track record. Thousands of installations across sports fields, golf courses, and lawns have proven its reliability over six decades.
Widely Available & Affordable
Produced by more sod farms than any other bermuda variety. No patent royalties means competitive pricing — often the most budget-friendly premium bermuda option.
Excellent Heat Performance
Bred in southern Georgia, Tifway 419 thrives in intense summer heat. Maintains color, density, and growth rate through the hottest conditions across the South.
Strong Wear Recovery
Dense, rapidly spreading growth driven by vigorous stolons and rhizomes means divots fill quickly and worn areas recover without reseeding.

Tifway 419 vs Latitude 36
Choose Tifway 419 if...
You're on a budget and need wide availability. Tifway 419 has 60+ years of proven reliability, no patent royalties, lower cost, and is produced by more sod farms than any other bermuda.
Choose Latitude 36 if...
You want better cold tolerance, earlier spring green-up, improved spring dead spot resistance, finer texture, and lower nitrogen requirements. Latitude 36 outperforms 419 in nearly every category for the transition zone.
Tifway 419 vs NorthBridge
Choose Tifway 419 if...
You need the most affordable, widely available option with a massive track record. Tifway 419 is still a solid bermuda with well-understood maintenance programs and no patent costs.
Choose NorthBridge if...
You want superior cold tolerance, better shear strength for sports fields, earlier spring green-up, and improved spring dead spot resistance. NorthBridge is a modern upgrade of 419 built for the transition zone.
Maintenance Guide
Mowing
Mow every 3-6 days during peak summer growth — Tifway 419 grows aggressively. Home lawns: 0.75-1.5 inches with a reel mower for best results. Sports fields: 0.75-1.5 inches. Golf fairways: 0.5-0.75 inches. Never remove more than one-third of the blade. Reel mower strongly recommended for heights below 1 inch.
Watering
1 inch per week during active growth. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root development. Does not tolerate poorly drained soils or standing water. New sod: water daily for 10-14 days, soaking to 3 inches depth. Reduce irrigation in fall as dormancy approaches.
Fertilizing
4-6 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year — higher than Latitude 36 or NorthBridge. Apply during active growing season only (April through September). Split into monthly applications. This higher nitrogen requirement is a real maintenance cost to consider when comparing varieties. Always base rates on soil test results.
Seasonal Care
Spring: scalp lawn in early spring to remove dead tissue; apply pre-emergent herbicide; begin fertilization after full green-up. Summer: mow frequently to stay within one-third rule; monitor for chinch bugs. Fall: reduce mowing; last nitrogen 4-6 weeks before frost; apply fungicide for spring dead spot prevention when soil temps are 60-80°F. Winter: minimize traffic on dormant turf; overseeding with ryegrass is common for winter color.
Tifway 419 FAQ
Is Tifway 419 still a good choice in 2025?
It depends on your situation. In warm southern climates (zones 8-11), Tifway 419 is still an excellent, reliable bermuda. For Tennessee and the transition zone, newer varieties like Latitude 36 and NorthBridge offer meaningful advantages in cold tolerance, spring dead spot resistance, and spring green-up. Tifway 419's biggest advantages today are its proven track record, wide availability, and lower cost.
Why is Tifway 419 cheaper than Latitude 36 or NorthBridge?
Tifway 419's plant patent expired long ago, so there are no royalty fees. It's also produced by far more sod farms than any other variety, which means greater supply and competitive pricing. Newer patented varieties like Latitude 36 and NorthBridge carry licensing fees that are reflected in the sod price.
What is spring dead spot and should I worry about it?
Spring dead spot (SDS) is the most damaging disease of bermudagrass in the transition zone. It appears as circular dead patches when the grass greens up in spring. Tifway 419 has moderate to significant susceptibility to SDS, especially after cold winters. Fall fungicide applications when soil temps are 60-80°F provide the best prevention. If SDS is a major concern, Latitude 36 and NorthBridge both have better resistance.
Does Tifway 419 need more maintenance than newer bermudas?
Yes. Tifway 419 requires 4-6 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year compared to 3-5 lbs for Latitude 36 and NorthBridge. It also grows more aggressively in summer, requiring mowing every 3-6 days. And in areas with SDS pressure, you may need preventive fungicide applications that newer varieties can skip. These ongoing costs should factor into any price comparison.
Can Tifway 419 handle shade?
Tifway 419 needs substantial direct sunlight — most sources recommend a minimum of 8 hours daily. It has low to moderate shade tolerance at best. If your yard has significant shade, NorthBridge offers moderate shade tolerance, or consider a zoysiagrass variety like Innovation or Geo Zoysia.
