Fescue Maintenance Quick Guide

Fescue care is different from warm-season grasses. The key is keeping it healthy through summer heat.

Watering

Water 1-1.5 inches per week, especially during summer. Fescue has deep roots but needs consistent moisture during hot weather to avoid summer stress and thinning.

Mowing

Mow at 3-4 inches high. Taller mowing promotes deeper roots and shade for the soil. Never cut more than one-third of the blade height at a time.

Fertilizing

Apply 3-4 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year. Fertilize primarily in fall (September and November) with a lighter application in spring. Avoid heavy summer fertilization.

Fall Overseeding

RTF Tall Fescue self-repairs via rhizomes, so annual overseeding is usually not needed. Light overseeding every 2-3 years can help maintain peak density after heavy summer stress.

Weed Control

Apply pre-emergent in late February or early March for crabgrass prevention. Spot-treat broadleaf weeds in fall when Fescue is actively growing and can fill in bare spots.

Summer Stress

Fescue may thin during extreme summer heat. Raise mowing height to 4 inches, water deeply, and avoid heavy traffic. The lawn will recover as temperatures cool in September.

Fescue Sod FAQ

Common questions about growing Tall Fescue in Tennessee.

When is the best time to install Fescue sod in Tennessee?
The best time to install Fescue sod in Tennessee is in fall (September through October) or early spring (March through April). Fall is ideal because cool temperatures and fall rains help the grass establish strong roots before summer heat. Avoid installing Fescue sod in the heat of summer if possible.
Does Fescue stay green all year in Tennessee?
Yes, Tall Fescue is a cool-season grass that stays green through Tennessee winters when warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia are dormant and brown. It may slow its growth during the hottest weeks of July and August but maintains color with adequate water.
Can Fescue handle shade?
Yes, Tall Fescue has good shade tolerance and can perform well with 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. It is one of the best options for shaded Tennessee lawns, especially under mature hardwood trees. For very heavy shade (less than 4 hours of sun), results may vary.
Does RTF Tall Fescue need to be overseeded?
Unlike conventional tall fescue, RTF (Rhizomatous Tall Fescue) spreads via underground rhizomes and self-repairs thin spots — similar to how bluegrass fills in. This means RTF needs significantly less overseeding than standard fescue. Some overseeding every 2-3 years may still help maintain peak density, but annual overseeding is typically not necessary with RTF.
