Why 365 Bluegrass?

365ss is a Kentucky bluegrass blend developed by Mountain View Seeds that has earned its reputation as the fastest-establishing KBG blend available. It combines three top-rated NTEP cultivars — Bolt, Legend, and Blue Note — into a formula built for sports turf professionals who need rapid germination, dense sod formation, and broadcast-quality appearance. Germinating in approximately one week (half the time of standard KBG), 365ss crowds out weeds by occupying bare soil before weed seeds can establish. It's been installed on professional and collegiate athletic fields across the country, including a full sod installation at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne using 18 truckloads of maxi rolls. For Tennessee homeowners, 365ss means the premium look of Kentucky bluegrass with faster results and superior sod strength.

Fastest Establishment

Germinates in approximately 7 days — roughly twice as fast as standard Kentucky bluegrass. Rapid tillering fills in bare soil before weeds can establish, reducing herbicide needs during the critical establishment window.

Sports-Field Pedigree

Used on NFL fields, MiLB stadiums, and collegiate athletic programs. Top-rated wear recovery in NTEP evaluations. Designed to handle heavy traffic and return to play faster after renovation.

Superior Sod Strength

Aggressive tillering from Bolt, Legend, and Blue Note creates an interlocking root and rhizome matrix that produces exceptional sod tensile strength — holds together in large maxi rolls without tearing.

TV-Quality Appearance

Dark green, fine-textured turf with excellent density and uniformity. Natural color that maintains through the growing season without excessive nitrogen. The visual standard for professional sports venues.

Best Applications

Sports fields — football, soccer, baseball, lacrosse — where rapid establishment and wear recovery are both required
New construction where the fastest ground coverage reduces erosion and weed competition on bare soil
Sports field renovation where the field must return to play as quickly as possible after reseeding
Sod production where fast establishment and superior sod strength improve farm efficiency
Premium residential lawns in northern climates wanting the finest KBG quality with fast results
Bluemuda overseeding in transition zone athletic facilities for year-round green playing surfaces
Municipal parks and recreation where multi-use fields handle heavy traffic across multiple sports

365 Bluegrass vs HGT Bluegrass

Choose 365 Bluegrass if...

You need the fastest possible establishment and the strongest sod. 365ss is the fastest-establishing KBG blend on the market with superior sod tensile strength — ideal for sports field renovations, new construction, and any project where speed to playable turf matters most.

Choose HGT Bluegrass if...

You need maximum disease and pest resistance. HGT has unprecedented summer patch resistance, NTEP-confirmed grub tolerance, and Purdue-confirmed billbug resistance. It also produces less thatch than 365ss despite aggressive growth.

365 Bluegrass vs RTF Fescue

Choose 365 Bluegrass if...

You want the premium fine-bladed look of Kentucky bluegrass with the widest mowing range (down to 0.5 inches for golf or sports). 365ss delivers TV-quality appearance and can handle low mowing heights that tall fescue simply cannot.

Choose RTF Fescue if...

You need a grass that handles Tennessee heat and shade with minimal watering. RTF uses 30% less water, tolerates significantly more shade, and its self-repairing rhizomes are unique among fescues. It's the better choice for low-maintenance transition zone properties.

Maintenance Guide

Mowing

Home lawns: 2.5–3.0 inches for best health and stress tolerance. Sports fields: 1.5–2.5 inches depending on sport and season. Low-cut applications: can go as low as 0.5 inches with adequate moisture and nutrition. Never remove more than one-third of the blade per mowing. Keep blades sharp.

Watering

About 1.0 inch per week in deep, infrequent sessions (1–2 times per week). New seeding: keep soil surface consistently moist until germination (~7 days), then gradually reduce frequency over 4–6 weeks. Water early morning before 10 AM. KBG goes dormant in extended drought but recovers with water.

Fertilizing

Minimum program: 2–3 lbs nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft annually. Intensive program: 3–5 lbs for sports fields and premium lawns in 3–4 applications. Heaviest applications in fall (September and November). Light or no summer fertilization. Use high-phosphorus starter fertilizer at seeding. Soil test recommended annually.

Seasonal Care

March–April: Resume mowing at 3 inches, apply pre-emergent for crabgrass, first fertilizer. May–June: Monitor moisture and begin supplemental irrigation, watch for disease onset, maintain consistent mowing. July–August: Irrigate to prevent dormancy, avoid heavy fertilization, monitor for grub activity. September–October: Primary seeding and renovation window, core aerate before seeding, apply fall fertilizer (most impactful application). November: Winterizer fertilizer, mow until growth stops, clear leaves.

365 Bluegrass FAQ

What does 365ss stand for?

The name reflects the product's goal: a grass that performs 365 days a year on sports surfaces. The "ss" stands for sports surface. It's a blend of three elite Kentucky bluegrass cultivars — Bolt, Legend, and Blue Note — developed by Mountain View Seeds specifically for professional and collegiate athletics.

Is 365 Bluegrass good for Tennessee lawns?

Yes, 365ss works well in Tennessee, particularly in the northern and middle regions of the state. It handles transition zone conditions better than most Kentucky bluegrasses and establishes faster than any other KBG blend. For properties with significant shade or where minimizing irrigation is a priority, RTF Fescue may be a better fit.

How fast does 365 Bluegrass establish compared to regular bluegrass?

365ss germinates in approximately 7 days under favorable conditions — roughly twice as fast as standard Kentucky bluegrass, which typically takes 14–21 days. This compressed timeline means new lawns reach mowable density sooner, sports fields return to play faster, and the window of weed vulnerability is significantly shorter.

How does 365 Bluegrass compare to HGT Bluegrass?

Both are top-tier Kentucky bluegrass blends. The primary difference: 365ss leads in establishment speed and sod strength, making it ideal for sports field renovations and new construction. HGT leads in disease resistance (especially summer patch) and insect tolerance, making it the better choice where pathogen and pest pressure are major concerns. Both have top-rated wear recovery in NTEP trials.
